Senior Substation Engineer – High Voltage Electrical Design
We are a well-capitalised engineering practice that delivers turnkey substation, transmission, and renewable interconnection solutions. Our culture values safety, technical rigor, and flexible working—engineers may choose fully remote, hybrid, or office-based schedules while contributing to critical grid-modernisation projects.
Responsibilities
- Develop 69 kV–500 kV substation physical designs, including bus work, structures, rigid & flexible conductors.
- Produce one-line, three-line, and schematic diagrams that meet NESC, IEEE, and client specifications.
- Specify power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnects, surge arresters, capacitor banks, reactors, and associated hardware.
- Execute grounding, lightning, and step-touch potential studies using CDEGS or equivalent.
- Build protection and control (P&C) schemes: relay settings, CT & PT sizing, trip logic, SCADA integration.
- Run load-flow, short-circuit, and arc-flash models in ETAP, SKM, or Aspen OneLiner.
- Coordinate with civil, structural, and transmission line teams to resolve interface challenges.
- Prepare sealed drawings, calculations, and reports for permitting and construction.
- Mentor junior engineers and drafters; conduct formal design reviews.
- Provide field and remote commissioning support, including relay testing and energisation punch-list closure.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering; Master’s welcomed.
- 7+ years of progressive experience as a Substation Engineer in investor-owned utility or EPC environments.
- Proven mastery of AutoCAD or MicroStation plus at least one analysis suite (ETAP, SKM, Aspen, CDEGS).
- Deep knowledge of protection theory, relay coordination, and SCADA/IEC 61850 communication protocols.
- Familiarity with NEC, NESC, IEEE C37, C57, and NETA testing standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for cross-functional and remote collaboration.
- Eligibility to work indefinitely in the United States.
- Ability to travel up to 20 % for site walks, FATs, and energisation support.
