Residential Solar Design Engineer
A rapidly scaling clean-energy firm partners with installers, EPCs, and sales organizations to streamline residential solar delivery. The team values precision, velocity, and creative problem-solving; you will collaborate with seasoned PV professionals who prize knowledge-sharing and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Generate complete, code-compliant permit sets—site plan, roof plan, single-line diagram, attachment details—within aggressive turnaround targets.
- Model energy production, shade, and string sizing in Aurora Solar (or equivalent) to maximize kWh output and aesthetic symmetry.
- Validate designs against the latest NEC, IRC, IFC, and local AHJ amendments; submit redline corrections promptly.
- Translate sales proposals into constructible drawings, integrating inverter portals and manufacturer specs.
- Maintain a dynamic pipeline of 40-60 small projects, prioritizing tasks through Kanban methods and clear status updates.
- Liaise with sales consultants, project managers, and field crews to resolve site discrepancies, change orders, and homeowner requests.
- Curate reusable CAD templates and block libraries, boosting drafting efficiency by 30 % quarter-over-quarter.
- Track evolving utility interconnection rules and incentive programs; incorporate requirements proactively.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural, or Civil Engineering—or equivalent practical experience.
- 3 + years designing residential PV systems with documented permit approval record across multiple U.S. jurisdictions.
- Mastery of AutoCAD (2D/3D) and at least one PV design platform such as Aurora Solar, Solo, or Helioscope.
- Detailed knowledge of NEC 2023 Article 690, structural loading, wind/snow calculations, and fire setbacks.
- Proven ability to juggle fast-moving micro-projects while meeting rigid deadlines and quality metrics.
- Fluent in reading structural plans, truss layouts, and title-24 reports; adept at communicating technical nuances to non-engineers.
- Authorized to work in the United States; able to overlap with Eastern or Pacific time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
- EIT, NABCEP PV Installation Professional, or NABCEP PV Technical Sales credential.
- Familiarity with Enphase Enlighten, SolarEdge Designer, and Tesla/Generac storage integration.
- Experience drafting for reroof, main-panel-upgrade, and EV-charger scopes.
- Competence in Python, VBA, or SQL for automating repetitive design calculations.
