Remote Structural Renovation Engineer
Your Impact
- Conduct comprehensive structural condition assessments for challenging adaptive reuse and change-of-use projects, determining the viability and potential of existing structures.
- Engineer creative and efficient structural strengthening, seismic retrofits, and repair solutions for a wide range of aging or historic structures.
- Collaborate with architects, developers, and MEP engineers to seamlessly integrate modern building systems and architectural visions into the fabric of existing constructions.
- Provide rapid-response engineering and inventive solutions for unforeseen conditions discovered during the construction, demolition, and investigation phases... an essential part of any renovation.
- Navigate and expertly apply the International Existing Building Code (IEBC) and other relevant standards to ensure every project's compliance, safety, and longevity.
- Develop sensitive design approaches that respect and preserve the irreplaceable historic fabric of heritage buildings while achieving modern performance and safety standards.
- Perform forensic analysis and due diligence investigations to determine structural capacity, identify potential liabilities, and inform project feasibility from the earliest stages.
Core Qualifications and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required; a Master’s degree with a structural focus is a significant advantage.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly preferred, with the ability to gain licensure in multiple states. A Structural Engineer (SE) license is a major plus.
- You possess a minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience focused specifically on the structural analysis, assessment, and design for the renovation of existing buildings.
- Demonstrated proficiency with advanced structural analysis software such as ETABS, RISA-3D, and SAP2000 for the complex modeling of existing and modified structures.
- Advanced skills in Revit for Building Information Modeling (BIM) and AutoCAD for the production of clear and concise construction documents.
- You have a deep understanding of (or direct experience with) Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods and modern survey tools like 3D laser scanners for data capture.
- In-depth knowledge of a vast array of construction types and materials—from historic mass timber and unreinforced masonry to mid-century concrete and early steel systems.
- Proven ability in creative problem-solving, especially when addressing complex material compatibility, constructability challenges, and phasing in occupied renovations.
What Sets You Apart
- A palpable passion for architectural heritage and a genuine desire to breathe new life into the built environment.
- Exceptional communication skills, capable of articulating complex structural concepts to non-technical stakeholders like clients, architects, and historic preservation officers.
- An investigative mindset, you truly enjoy the detective work inherent in uncovering a building's structural history and secrets.
- You think beyond prescriptive codes, with experience in performance-based design principles, particularly for seismic upgrades where standard solutions are impractical.
