Rail Civil Engineer
Our diverse project portfolio features landmark developments for major transit authorities, government agencies, and Class I railroads. We cultivate a culture rooted in innovation, technical excellence, and professional growth, empowering our engineers to solve the industry's most complex challenges. You will collaborate with a distinguished team of industry-leading experts on projects that have a tangible, positive impact on national commerce and community mobility.
Key Responsibilities
- Architect and engineer the comprehensive geometric design of sophisticated railway track systems, including the detailed development of horizontal and vertical alignments for mainline, industrial, and yard tracks.
- Lead the design and specification of critical track components, such as high-speed turnouts, complex crossings, and special trackwork, ensuring functionality and safety.
- Develop master plans and detailed engineering designs for new railyards and intermodal terminals, focusing on operational efficiency, capacity optimization, and future expansion capabilities.
- Conduct rigorous track and infrastructure inspections and assessments to identify deficiencies, prescribe remediation, and ensure unwavering compliance with FRA Track Safety Standards.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on AREMA Recommended Practices, guiding project teams and stakeholders to ensure all design and construction activities adhere to the highest industry benchmarks.
- Manage the full lifecycle of track construction and maintenance projects, from initial scoping and budgeting to contractor oversight and final project closeout. Your role extends beyond pure design... you will be a pivotal figure in the project's physical realization.
- Engineer effective and sustainable drainage solutions for track beds and right-of-ways, applying advanced geotechnical principles to guarantee long-term track stability and performance.
Core Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a closely related technical discipline is required for this position.
- Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license is highly desirable and strongly preferred.
- A minimum of seven years of progressive, hands-on experience focused specifically on railroad engineering, track design, and construction projects. What does this mean in practice? It means you have a portfolio of successfully completed rail projects.
- Profound, demonstrable knowledge of the AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering and all pertinent FRA regulations—your expertise here is non-negotiable.
- Verifiable experience working on projects for or with Class I or Short Line railroads, public transit authorities (e.g., commuter rail, light rail), or government transportation bodies.
- Exceptional project management and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Technical Proficiencies
- Advanced, expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D is an essential foundation for success in this role.
- Extensive, demonstrated experience utilizing Bentley MicroStation and its specialized rail design applications (such as Bentley OpenRail Designer) for intricate infrastructure modeling.
- Significant familiarity with advanced railway engineering software—for instance, TALUS for alignment analysis and optimization—is a considerable advantage.
- Competency in applying modern surveying principles and the ability to interpret complex geotechnical reports for the purpose of track bed, subgrade, and drainage system design.
