Microgrid Design Engineer – Energy & DER Integration
Operating at the forefront of renewable power and advanced controls, our multidisciplinary team delivers turnkey microgrid solutions from early feasibility through commissioning. We value rigor, creativity, and pragmatic collaboration—wherever you work best.
Key Responsibilities
– Lead feasibility studies that quantify technical viability, resilience benefits, and lifecycle economics.
– Model generation/load scenarios in HOMER Pro, DER-CAM, or ETAP to size solar, storage, and conventional assets.
– Execute detailed load flow, short-circuit, and protection coordination analyses.
– Draft functional specifications for microgrid controllers, power electronics, and communication networks.
– Select and configure inverters, switchgear, transformers, and metering to meet IEEE 1547, UL 1741, and utility interconnection requirements.
– Develop advanced control logic in MATLAB/Simulink or RTDS to enable seamless islanding, black-start, and peak-shaving modes.
– Coordinate with civil, structural, and mechanical disciplines to integrate equipment footprints, cable routing, and thermal management.
– Produce commissioning sequences, pre-functional test plans, and operator training materials.
– Present findings to non-technical stakeholders, distilling complex analyses into actionable recommendations.
– Support remote or on-site troubleshooting during system energization and performance tuning.
Required Qualifications
– Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Power Systems Engineering (Master’s preferred).
– 5+ years designing renewable or DER-heavy power systems; at least 2 years focused on microgrids.
– Proficiency with HOMER Pro or DER-CAM, plus ETAP or equivalent for power system studies.
– Solid grasp of control theory, power electronics, and SCADA/network protocols (Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850).
– Demonstrated ability to author clear technical documents and drawings (AutoCAD, Revit, or similar).
– Eligible to work in the United States; able to travel up to 15 % for site visits and commissioning.
Preferred Skills
– Experience with DoD or critical-infrastructure resilience standards.
– Familiarity with real-time simulation platforms (OPAL-RT, RTDS).
– Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
– Working knowledge of financial modeling and incentive structures for renewable projects.
