Mass Timber Structural Engineer – Timber Design Specialist

Remotely
Full-time

An employee-owned consulting group celebrated for award-winning sustainable buildings. The team blends structural ingenuity with wood science, digital fabrication, and advanced BIM to deliver eye-catching, low-carbon projects nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

- Develop structural concepts, perform full timber analysis, and size members for gravity, wind, and seismic loads.

- Detail advanced concealed and exposed connections using steel, timber rivets, self-tapping screws, and proprietary fasteners.

- Validate fire-resistance ratings, charring limits, and encapsulation strategies in line with current ICC-ES reports.

- Quantify shrinkage, creep, and moisture movement for CLT panels, Glulam girders, and LVL elements.

- Coordinate 3D models with architects, fabricators, and erection crews to streamline shop drawing approval.

- Produce concise calculation packages and sealed drawings for permitting authorities.

- Mentor junior engineers; review their calculations and connection sketches.

- Interface with off-site factories to fine-tune CNC machining files and optimize panel layouts.

- Advocate for mass-timber best practices at industry workshops and virtual lunch-and-learns.

Skills & Experience Required

- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Civil or Structural Engineering.

- 5+ years designing timber structures; at least one completed multi-story mass-timber project.

- Proficiency in RISA-3D, WoodWorks Sizer, and RAM-Elements; ability to script quick checks in Excel or Python.

- Skilled in Revit and AutoCAD for plan sets; exposure to CadWork or HSBcad for fabrication models.

- Deep knowledge of NDS, ASCE 7, IBC 2024, AWC SDPWS, and relevant ASTM fire-test standards.

- Familiarity with building-envelope physics—thermal bridging, vapor drive, and acoustic separation.

- Exceptional written and verbal communication; comfortable presenting to clients and code officials.

- E.I.T. required; P.E. or S.E. license in at least one U.S. jurisdiction strongly preferred.

Tools You’ll Use

- RISA-3D for global analysis.

- WoodWorks Sizer & Shearwall for component checks.

- Revit, Navisworks, and Dynamo for BIM integration.

- CadWork or HSBcad for CNC panel coordination.

- Bluebeam Revu for markup and collaborative review.

Career Growth

You will spearhead headline projects—stadiums, academic centers, and carbon-neutral towers—while charting a path toward Technical Director or Principal Engineer. Leadership training, conference attendance, and research collaborations are encouraged.
