Masonry Design Engineer (Structural)

Key Responsibilities
- Engineer and design complex structural systems utilizing brick, concrete masonry units (CMU), and stone for commercial, institutional, and residential projects.
- Perform detailed structural analysis and design for both reinforced and unreinforced masonry components, ensuring structural integrity and code compliance.
- Develop comprehensive construction documents, meticulously detailing lintels, bond patterns, expansion joints, and control joints for new construction.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on masonry building codes, ensuring all designs strictly adhere to *TMS 402/602 standards* and other relevant regulations.
- Conduct forensic analysis and develop innovative solutions to troubleshoot moisture intrusion, cracking, and other serviceability issues in existing masonry structures.
- Collaborate with architects and construction teams to provide technical guidance and review submittals (shop drawings, product data, etc.) related to masonry construction.
- Prepare detailed reports and specifications for masonry repair, restoration, and preservation projects—often involving historic structures.
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is required; a Master's degree is highly preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one US state is strongly desired.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience focused specifically on masonry structural design within an A/E consulting or specialty engineering environment.
- Demonstrated mastery of the TMS 402/602 (Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures).
- Proficiency in structural analysis software such as RISA-3D, Enercalc, or similar tools. Experience with specialized masonry software like MASS is a significant advantage.
- In-depth knowledge of masonry material properties—including brick, block, stone, mortar, and grout—and their interaction.
- Proven expertise in masonry veneer design, moisture management strategies, and the detailing of flashing and waterproofing systems.
- Exceptional ability to diagnose masonry failures and develop effective repair and restoration specifications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a meticulous attention to detail.
