HVAC Design Engineer
Core Responsibilities
- Perform block-by-block heating and cooling load calculations in TRACE 3D Plus, HAP, and eQUEST.
- Size air-handling units, VAVs, FCUs, pumps, and fans to meet ASHRAE 62.1 and 90.1.
- Engineer low-loss ductwork and hydronic piping networks—balancing friction, velocity, and acoustics.
- Generate Revit MEP families, detailed sections, and annotated construction sheets.
- Draft process & instrumentation diagrams that integrate BAS points, sensors, and safeties.
- Write CSI-format technical specifications covering equipment, testing, and commissioning.
- Conduct virtual or in-person site surveys; capture existing conditions with Bluebeam Revu markups.
- Apply value-engineering tactics that trim energy, first cost, and maintenance.
- Verify all designs align with IMC, IECC, local amendments, and sustainable design guidelines.
- Coordinate with structural, electrical, and architectural teams through BIM clash reviews.
Must-Have Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 5+ years designing commercial HVAC systems in an MEP or design-build environment.
- Proficiency with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, TRACE 3D Plus, and Carrier HAP.
- Working knowledge of thermodynamics, psychrometrics, and fluid mechanics.
- Demonstrated understanding of ASHRAE standards, building codes, and NFPA fire-dampers.
- Ability to create permit-ready drawing sets with minimal oversight.
- Clear, concise technical writing skills for specifications and peer reviews.
Bonus Points
- PE license or progress toward licensure.
- Experience with geothermal heat-pump loops or chilled-beam systems.
- Familiarity with energy-modeling calibration and Measurement & Verification (M&V).
- LEED AP or WELL certification.
