HVAC Controls Engineer – Building Automation & BMS Expert

Remotely
Full-time

We are a multidisciplinary engineering practice that merges building science, controls innovation, and data analytics to deliver measurable energy savings. Our portfolio spans life-science labs, mission-critical facilities, K-12 campuses, and high-rise offices. Independent ownership empowers rapid decision-making and continuous professional development. (Remote collaboration is available for candidates adept at virtual commissioning.)

Responsibilities

- Develop end-to-end BAS/BMS designs for new construction, retrofits, and deep-energy upgrades.

- Write clear, fail-safe sequences of operation for air-handling units, chilled-water plants, VAV boxes, and heat-pump loops.

- Program and test DDC platforms (Tridium Niagara, Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo, ALC).

- Specify sensors, valves, variable-speed drives, and actuators appropriate to system dynamics.

- Map and secure BACnet/IP, BACnet MS/TP, and Modbus TCP networks—ensuring cyber-hardened connectivity.

- Generate detailed schematics, I/O schedules, and network riser diagrams.

- Lead on-site or remote commissioning; validate point-to-point, functional testing, and trend-logging.

- Diagnose performance drift, optimize PID loops, and author retrofit control strategies that slash kWh and kW demand.

- Mentor junior technologists, promoting rigorous documentation and root-cause analysis.

Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering.

- 5+ years designing and programming commercial BAS/BMS.

- Mastery of HVAC fundamentals: psychrometrics, heat transfer, fan and pump laws.

- Proven experience with at least two major platforms—Niagara 4, Metasys, Desigo, or ALC.

- Fluency in BACnet and Modbus protocols, including device instance management and BBMD configuration.

- Ability to interpret electrical one-lines, wiring diagrams, and panel schedules.

- Strong analytical mindset; comfortable extracting insights from trend logs and energy dashboards.

- Excellent written and verbal communication—translate engineering nuance into actionable language for facility teams.

- Authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

- CEM, LEED AP, or Certified Niagara Programmer.

- Exposure to RESTful APIs, MQTT, or Haystack tagging for IoT integration.

- Experience with demand-response algorithms or grid-interactive buildings.

- Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks (ISA/IEC 62443, NIST 800-82) as applied to operational technology.
