About the Role  

You will lead structural investigations and preservation design for landmark courthouses, industrial lofts, museums, and vernacular buildings. Using non-destructive testing, finite-element analysis, and BIM, you will transform fragile landmarks into vibrant, code-compliant spaces without erasing their stories.


Responsibilities  

- Perform on-site and remote condition assessments of historic timber, stone, and unreinforced masonry.  

- Direct laser scanning crews; convert point clouds into AutoCAD and Revit models.  

- Calculate load paths and design hidden reinforcements that respect original construction intentions.  

- Specify compatible mortars, grouts, composites, and corrosion inhibitors.  

- Draft Historic Structure Reports and Construction Documents that meet federal and state preservation guidelines.  

- Coordinate with architects, conservators, code officials, and community stakeholders.  

- Mentor junior engineers in preservation theory, seismic retrofit strategies, and material conservation science.  

- Present findings to review boards and at professional conferences—advocating for sustainable adaptive reuse.  


Core Requirements  

- Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state.  

- 5+ years in structural analysis of existing or historic buildings.  

- Mastery of SAP2000 or similar, plus Revit-based documentation.  

- Proven knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.  

- Field experience with ground-penetrating radar, impact-echo, or ultrasonic pulse velocity.  

- Clear, concise technical writing; sample reports will be requested.  

- Ability to travel to project sites up to 20 % of the year.


Preferred Extras  

- Graduate focus in historic preservation, conservation engineering, or materials science.  

- Familiarity with FEMA P-807, ASCE 41, and IBC Chapter 34.  

- Experience securing federal and state historic tax credits.  

- LEED AP or WELL accreditation.  

- Spanish reading proficiency for archival research.
