Foundations Engineer – Structural & Geotechnical Design
A Foundations Engineer is pivotal to every structure’s longevity. From deep piles under high-rise towers to mat slabs for industrial plants, you will merge structural and geotechnical expertise to create resilient, code-compliant solutions. You will collaborate with civil, structural, and construction teams nationwide—often remotely—to deliver economical designs that survive seismic, wind, and settlement demands.
Key Responsibilities
- Design deep foundations—driven piles, drilled shafts, micropiles—for highways, ports, and energy facilities.
- Engineer shallow foundations (spread footings, mats) balancing bearing capacity and settlement criteria.
- Model soil-structure interaction using PLAXIS 2D/3D, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, SAFE, and GeoStudio.
- Specify earth-retaining systems—sheet piles, soldier pile walls, secant piles—appropriate to excavation depth and groundwater.
- Interpret geotechnical investigation data; write concise design memoranda and calculation packages.
- Recommend ground-improvement options (jet grouting, vibro-compaction, rigid inclusions) when native soils underperform.
- Oversee construction, load testing, PDA monitoring, and integrity testing to verify design assumptions.
- Review contractor submittals and respond to RFI’s, ensuring field changes remain structurally sound.
- Mentor junior engineers, championing safety and quality control throughout each project phase.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Civil or Structural Engineering plus 5+ years in foundation design.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or ability to obtain within 12 months.
- Proficiency with PLAXIS, LPILE, GROUP, SAFE, and related analysis tools.
- Solid command of AASHTO, IBC, and ACI 318 deep-foundation provisions.
- Strong technical writing and verbal skills tailored to non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Skills
- Master’s in Geotechnical Engineering.
- Experience with offshore monopiles or wind-turbine foundations.
- Familiarity with BIM workflows (Revit, Civil 3D) for interdisciplinary coordination.
- Past exposure to Design-Build or EPC project delivery.
Tools & Tech
- PLAXIS, LPILE, SHAFT, GROUP.
- SAFE, GeoStudio, SETTLE3.
- AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit (view-only).
- Microsoft 365, Bluebeam Revu.
