Forensic Structural Engineer (PE) - Failure Analysis
What the Day-to-Day Looks Like
- On-site investigations across various property types.
- Digging into the cause and origin of structural failures - from material defects to construction errors or weather events.
- Documenting field conditions using everything from basic tools to advanced tech like laser scanners, drones, and NDT equipment.
- Writing detailed, defensible engineering reports that clearly explain your findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Sometimes you'll be designing repairs for damaged structures.
- Providing litigation support and expert testimony.
The Right Kind of Experience
- A Professional Engineer (PE) license is required.
- 5-8 years of structural engineering experience. Some of that time must be in forensics, building diagnostics, or property condition assessments.
- You need to be comfortable on a construction site and in a deposition. Strong communication is absolutely key.
- Broad knowledge of construction types, both historic and modern.
- Familiarity with analytical software like STAAD.Pro or RISA-3D for load analysis is a big plus.
- You can manage projects and deadlines without someone looking over your shoulder.
