Dam Safety Engineer – Civil & Geotechnical Design Role
You will shape new embankment and concrete dams, strengthen aging levees, and safeguard downstream communities. Our portfolio spans flood-control reservoirs, hydroelectric facilities, and mining tailings. Expect collaboration with hydrologists, structural specialists, and data scientists who translate field instrumentation into actionable insight.
Responsibilities
- Perform seepage, slope-stability, and seismic deformation analyses with GeoStudio (SEEP/W, SLOPE/W), PLAXIS, and finite-element packages.
- Develop hydraulic models in HEC-RAS to size spillways, outlet works, and energy dissipation structures.
- Lead Dam Safety Inspections and Failure Modes & Effects Analyses; document findings in rigorous technical reports.
- Prepare Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) that satisfy FERC and state dam-safety regulations.
- Generate civil drawings and 3D details in AutoCAD and Revit for permit submittals.
- Oversee on-site construction, grouting, and rehabilitation; verify compliance with specifications.
- Mentor junior engineers, review calculations, and present design decisions to clients and regulators.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state—ability to obtain comity registration elsewhere.
- 6+ years designing dams, levees, or hydraulic structures, including stability and seepage analysis.
- Proficiency with GeoStudio, PLAXIS, and HEC-RAS; familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Solid grounding in soil and rock mechanics, hydrology, seismology, and risk analysis.
- Clear, persuasive technical writing and verbal communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree with focus on Geotechnical or Hydraulic Engineering.
- Prior interaction with federal agencies such as USACE or Bureau of Reclamation.
- Experience developing probabilistic risk assessments and using Python or MATLAB for data reduction.
- Construction management of roller-compacted concrete or earth-fill dams.
Impact & Growth
You will influence national water infrastructure policy, travel to iconic dam sites, and guide design decisions that endure for decades. Our culture prizes continuous learning, thought leadership, and flexible collaboration—whether on-site or via secure cloud platforms.
