Building Systems Design Engineer
Our multidisciplinary consultancy partners with leading architects, developers, and facility owners on mission-critical, healthcare, higher-education, and clean-tech campuses across North America. You will influence high-performance building envelopes, adopt emerging HVAC technologies, and see your concepts realized—from schematic concept to ribbon cutting.
Responsibilities
- Perform HVAC load calculations using Trane TRACE 700 or Carrier HAP.
- Develop ductwork, piping, and plumbing layouts in Revit MEP and AutoCAD MEP.
- Select equipment that meets energy targets, acoustics, and life-cycle cost goals.
- Produce fire-protection strategies and coordinate sprinkler zoning.
- Create sealed construction documents, specifications, and sequence-of-operations narratives.
- Verify compliance with IMC, IPC, NFPA, and local energy codes.
- Collaborate with architects and structural teams to resolve clashes and optimize space usage.
- Prepare energy models to evaluate ECMs and LEED or IgCC pathways.
- Present technical findings to stakeholders in concise, data-driven reports.
- Mentor junior engineers, reviewing calculations and BIM standards.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering.
- 5+ years of MEP design experience in commercial or institutional buildings.
- Proficiency with Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, and either Trane TRACE 700 or Carrier HAP.
- Solid knowledge of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, psychrometrics, and ASHRAE 62.1, 90.1.
- Experience generating HVAC load calculations and plumbing fixture counts.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and submittals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for client presentations.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications
- PE or EIT license in a U.S. jurisdiction.
- Hands-on energy-modeling with IES-VE, eQuest, or OpenStudio.
- Familiarity with BIM clash detection (Navisworks) and Dynamo scripting.
- Knowledge of fire protection hydraulic calculations and seismic bracing.
- Prior work on net-zero or all-electric building programs.
- Experience with remote, multi-office project collaboration.
