Building Code Engineer | Code Consultant – Remote Possible
About the Role
You join a national consultancy that supports architects, developers, insurers, and public agencies across the U.S. The practice synthesizes code expertise, design intuition, and risk analytics. Responsibilities
- Interpret IBC, IFC, IMC, IPC, NEC, and accessibility provisions with precision.
- Conduct full-cycle code compliance plan reviews for commercial, mixed-use, and high-rise projects.
- Draft alternative means & methods narratives—defensible and data-driven.
- Prepare due-diligence reports for acquisitions, mergers, and insurance underwriting.
- Advise architects, developers, and investors on occupancy strategy and egress solutions.
- Represent project teams in negotiations with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
- Track code amendments across U.S. jurisdictions; update internal knowledge base.
- Mentor junior examiners and deliver in-house training sessions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s in Architecture, Civil, Structural, Fire Protection, or related engineering discipline.
- 7+ years as Plans Examiner, Building Official, or Code Consultant.
- Expert command of ICC family of codes; working grasp of NFPA 101 & 13, ADA/ABA Standards.
- Certified Building Official (CBO) or ICC Plans Examiner—active and in good standing.
- Proven skill with Bluebeam, digital plan review platforms, and cloud collaboration suites.
- Capable communicator—written reports, technical memos, and persuasive code arguments.
- Logical reasoning, negotiation prowess, and deadline rigor.
Preferred Extras
- PE, RA, or Fire Protection Engineer license.
- Experience with performance-based fire engineering or smoke modeling.
- Familiarity with LEED, WELL, and IgCC sustainability overlays.
