We are looking for a Power Electronics Engineer to design and optimize high-power electronic systems for industrial applications, including motor drives, power supplies, and automation equipment. You will work on robust, high-efficiency solutions for harsh industrial environments, ensuring reliability and compliance with UK/EU standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop power converters, inverters, and motor drives for industrial machinery (e.g., CNC machines, conveyor systems, robotics).
- Simulate and validate high-power circuits (IGBT/SiC-based) using PSpice, MATLAB/Simulink, or PLECS.
- Optimize thermal management (liquid cooling, heatsinks) for high-current industrial applications.
- Troubleshoot EMI/EMC issues and ensure compliance with EN 61000-6-4 (industrial emissions standards).
- Collaborate with control engineers to implement PLC/DSP-based motor control algorithms (FOC, DTC).
- Work on regenerative braking systems for industrial cranes/elevators to improve energy efficiency.
- Support failure analysis and reliability testing (MTBF, HALT) for ruggedized industrial electronics.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s/Master’s in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or equivalent).
- 3+ years in industrial power electronics (e.g., motor drives, UPS systems, welding equipment).
- Proficiency in:
- Simulation tools: ANSYS, LTspice, or PSIM.
- PCB design: Altium/Cadence (high-current layouts).
- Lab equipment: Oscilloscopes, thermal cyclers, vibration testers.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (EtherCAT, CAN bus, Modbus).
- Familiarity with functional safety standards (IEC 61508, SIL-3).
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with high-voltage DC systems (e.g., 1kV+ for mining/rail applications).
- Background in predictive maintenance (AI/ML for power electronics health monitoring).
- CEng or IET membership (or working toward it).
Location: Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, or Remote/Hybrid
